Micah's skill building model.

Skill-building involves teaching your dog helpful behaviors that can be used to replace undesired behaviors. We tend to focus on what we don't want our dog to do rather than what we would like them to do instead. For example, clients often reach out with the concern of their dog jumping on guests when they enter the home. Instead of teaching your dog to do "nothing" when a guest walks in, it is significantly more effective to train the dog to do something else. Going to their bed, sitting politely with the owner, or even bringing the guest a toy may be a great alternative to jumping on the guest.

In other words, if you're asked to "not think of pink elephants", they're the first thing to pop into your mind. However, if I asked you to "think of purple chihuahuas", the pink elephants are no longer a concern. Replacing unwanted behavior with a desired skill is always the more effective route for your dog.

Skill-building with your dog is also an invaluable redirection tool for emergency circumstances. A strong recall or stay can be your last line of defense with a dog darting towards the road or initiating a dangerous interaction. It is our belief that skill-building is a critical step in a good dog training program.

More on How We Train

A force-free approach to training.

All of our training is conducted through an evidence-based, humane approach to dog training, utilizing the science of applied behavior analysis. Positive reinforcement training, enrichment, and good management of the environment are used to shape and modify behavior without the use of fear and punishment.

Strong positive reinforcement forms the foundation of our training. We reward desired behaviors to shape and increase their frequency. Our approach is always non-confrontational and relies on skilled training and high-value rewards. Our positive reinforcement program replaces unwanted behaviors while reducing frustration for both you and your dog. We emphasize understanding, meeting needs, and providing consistent guidance for emotionally balanced companions.

We believe in an ethical approach to training that builds strong bonds and understanding with your dog. We always balance the dog's needs with the owner's goals and create an environment that enriches and teaches your dog to live in harmony with their owner. Our approach avoids creating an environment of fear, punishment, or intimidation.
